This is a new rivalry!

I'm watching the Celtics-Magic game and I'm starting to wonder something - why do so many teams think they're our rivals? The Heat, the Knicks, and now commentators are calling Orlando a rival because of the Christmas Day game? Listen, we have one rival - LA. Everybody else is just another team to beat. (Maybe the Heat and the Knicks more than others).

By the way, Reggie Miller just compared Rondo's performance tonight to Brady's on Sunday. Too soon Reggie?

I told you this would happen

I did it. Bit it on Hanson Street after I slipped on a 5 foot patch of ice. Legs flying like a cartoon character...a nice man and his boyfriend helped me up after I laid on my back for 30 seconds.

Hanson Street is Dangerous, Y'all

I'm back in Boston after being in Maryland for a month. Let me tell you...least productive month of my life. And that's including the month after Freshman year when I was unemployed at slept til 2 erryday...at least I was building a tan then. I actually look like a vampire right now.

ANYWAYS, I came home and it was snowing, no surprise, and there's snow everywhere. By the way, this skit is one of the best SNL has done in a while... "by the time it stopped on Sunday...there was snow everywhere." Well the thing about this snow is that it is making my neighborhood a battlefield. Last night my friend narrowly dodged a serious injury from heavy ass snow falling off the roof. Trees a cracking under the pressure of the snow like a neurotic teenager taking the SAT.

I have to watch my back with this snow. It creeps on you. Black ice, collapsing branches, it's like The Hurt Locker over here in the South End. Shit's gettin real.

Also, I came home to basically two bottles of vodka, a nip of rum, and powdered sugar. What was Alaska getting into while I was in Maryland? Worried about that girl...

Post-Hiatus

Wow. I have to be honest, it feels a lot shorter that I haven't blogged than it's been in reality...I think it's because I think a lot about blogging and forget to actually do it.
I'm currently in Maryland for winter break, and let me start off by saying that BU's winter break is entirely too long (until Jan. 18th). It may seem like a weird complaint, but really, how much West Wing can I watch in my parents' house while all my friends at home and from GW go to their real jobs during the day? I myself am headed back to Boston January 10th to start my internship.

In case anyone is interested, I've compiled a few of my videos of news stories I did last semester here http://vimeo.com/user5463204. So feel free to stalk and laugh.

For the first time in years I'm sort of proud of my Skins today. Their back-ups and young guys pulled out a win for us, and even though we're at the part of the year when we're supposed to be excited about playing "spoiler" and are actually depressed that it's been another bad year, this win felt good. It felt earned.

In other news I've started snowboarding again for the first time in 4 years! It feels good, except that I can tell I'm older in two ways - my knees after a day on the slopes, and how I feel more of a pull towards the crappy ski taverns than the terrain park. All in all I'm just happy to be riding again, and looking forward to hitting some New England resorts. If I'm going to freeze my ass off in the Northeast I might as well be on the mountains, right?

Another Reason the Hancock Building is Terrible

So I was walking through the wind vortex today (which actually wasn't horrible windy for once), on my way to work, and I saw something pretty disturbing. I saw about 4 or 5 dead birds laying on the sidewalk. I guess the birds think the mirrored building is just more sky and fly right into it, kill themselves, and land on the sidewalks. Pretty digusting.
THEN I got to work, and what did my boss show me? More dead birds that had flown into our windows and landed on top of our sign. Sick. The thing is, nobody can clean them up so they're all half decomposing. But what's weirder is that on my walk home all the dead birds next to the Hancock building were gone. Like, is it someone's job to clean up all the dead birds that have landed on the sidewalk? Or is it just some crazy homeless person who collects them?
It made me think of this - apparently when I was little I used to pick up dead birds, pull them around in my red wagon, and water them with a watering can. What the hell were my parents doing?

I also wanted to share another little segment of shit my roommate says:

"I got a D+! That's such an improvement."

"I look at him and want to make out with him. But I think this guy is like, SUCH a loser."

"I think I would make a good jew. I mean, I have red hair."

"I don't know if you know this, but I got hit by a truck pretty recently."

"He said, 'Unlike you, I can have fun without drinking.' I was like, I'm pretty sure I'm infinitely more fun than you are at a bar."

"I bet you're get a 100 percentile on this"

"I'm like a retarded person"

"I would have figured this out if I made it subtract"

...more to come.

Studying is so boring

Look how dedicated I am to this blog. I'm taking some time off from my little study sesh to write on my little megoblog. It definitely has nothing to do with not wanting to review New York Times v. Sullivan again. BU, whatchu think I am, some kinda lawz student? Did I TAKE the LSATS last year? Did I? No.

OH man. SVU commercial just came on..."It's Halloween on SVU...and SVU is not carving...pumpkins." They really could've improved that one by having Ice T narrate it. I'm telling you, this is why I'm going into television. I don't drop the ball like that, NBC.

Sunday Night Football is on (Skins v. Colts), and it was hard enough to watch this theme song before that SNL skit. Now it's completely impossible. I don't really know what to expect here...after the Giants massacre I'm pretty nervous. I just haven't seen the Skins get demolished in a year and I pretty clearly remember how much it sucks. I just don't wanna see the Colts stomp 'em (get it?)

PS - Alaska showed me this and it's pretty much the funniest thing I've seen in a while. To think I was walking around quoting this before seeing it, without even knowing how awesome it was. I thought "now you fucked up" was one of those phrases you say all the time, but have no idea who started it. Like "Ain't that some shit."

Daaaamn Boston, why you so cold to me?

So I am officially at the point of no return. I haven't left the house without a jacket in a week, and I think the cold is here to stay. Today was extra windy, so the vortex was even more powerful. The goddamn thing tried to steal my Red Sox hat like it ate my umbrella, and it blew it off my head...TWICE. So there I was, walking home from class and my hat flew right off and hit a car. Obviously I ran into the street to rescue it, I've had that hat for years! Another day of battle next to Hancock building.

I'll change the subject before this turns into a weather blog. I have to discuss the bane of my existence which is Berklee kids. Look, I can't tell the difference between you and the homeless and I'm sick of you spilling your DJ equipment and knocking people over with your instrument cases on the Green Line. Then again, I'm always on the lookout of the next J Mayer.

I had class at 9 am this morning, and I seriously can't do anything productive right now. I might just call it quits and nap...like a cat. Nap. Meow

I have to wear pants now?

I have to start off this post by showing this to anyone who hasn't seen it:
SNL hit the mark on this one...how ridiculously corny are all of these shows' openings? And don't get me started on that FOX robot. But really this skit made me so happy, way to go Lorne Michaels.

Alright. More importantly, it's starting to get chilly here. And so begins a number of blog posts about how cold Boston is. I mean DC has a high of 88 today. What's Boston's? 66. Oh well, I can't say I didn't know what I was getting myself into.

My football teams had ANOTHER 2-0 weekend. I think this is the first time that's happened in back to back weekends in maybe years. Skins and Irish beat two mediocre teams, which makes us slightly better than mediocre! I'll take what I can get. A win is a win, right?

P.S. I broke 3 glasses out Saturday night, but I want to point out that when I left McGreevy's still hadn't cleaned up the one I broke there. Yeah, I spent most of my time at that bar standing next to a pile of glass shards saying, "Hey watch out, some moron broke a glass there." Later in the night...I did not feel the same responsibilities. I don't always control my limbs well, you enter the bar with me at your own risk.

Chim Chiminy Chim Chiminy Chim Chim Charoo

So the past two weeks it's been raining a lot in Boston...and not just raining, we're getting the kind of weather that I would usually associate with November or March in DC (I still say that DC is Seattle of the east coast - with uglier people). The biggest problem is that I walk back and forth between the Copley Square T stop everyday, and there is literally a wind vortex that extends through copley square past the Hancock building.

This vortex has caused a lot of issues for me lately. For one thing, the Hancock building is all glass (for those of you unfamiliar), so I usually have to hold down any skirt I'm wearing unless I want to get the attention of some middle age business creeps inside. But worse, the wind has eaten 2 of my umbrellas.

Okay I lost one of those umbrellas at Clery's last weekend, but this thing really does turn all my cheapass umbrellas inside out, making me feel a Mary Poppins who is being punished by God. I'll let you guys know if I get carried away, "Up" style.

By the way, this is my third post this week. You see that? Breakin' my PR up here. Count it!

Oh and THIS

Don't get me wrong here, I ain't no birds fan, but this stupid commercial gets me everytime:

Look at that. Technically two posts in one day. HAWT DAWG

The leaves are changing

...or mostly just dying and making slippery spots on the sidewalks. Yes, beautiful fall is beginning to arrive in Boston. October is my favorite month of the year, culminating in my favorite day/night - Halloween! This year I'm a little worried that, unlike college, I'll only have one night to dress up. I feel compelled to wear the 15 dollar child's Notre Dame cheerleader uniform I bought on ebay two weeks ago, but I have to figure out some angle on it so I'm not just a lame-o cheerleader.
Speaking of Notre Dame, both my football teams won this weekend! Who all seen McNabb scramble say yeahhhh. Okay, I realize that both teams played pretty mediocre in their respective games, but I'm going to brag like an asshole anyway. Weekends with double wins like this come around so rarely in my life.
Like ever. That brings me to another thing, sorry to Miss Katelyn Langs that I did not blog on the topic she suggested:

katelynlangs: who should play next weekend...mcknabb or vicks

Good question Pants. I guess I just wasn't on the ball on that one. I'll try to step my game up for ya.

I saw Ben Affleck

...in the movie "The Town" tonight. No, not in real life yet, but that day will come. Apparently he is very tall in person which only enhances my desire to stand next to him. Blake Lively stole the movie though, with brilliant lines including "Boys like me" and "You gotta chase the rabbit to get the tail...my mom told me that." No doubt I will be repeating these at the BHP next weekend. It's no secret I've been neglecting the blog again. Grad school started up and I have my hands full with shooting boxers in Southie and annoying people with my microphone. Last weekend I tried to get some guys to talk on tape and they all pretended they couldn't understand me. Hey Emilios employees - nice try but I live around the corner, I know you habla Ingles. Also, my football teams are dragging ass all over their respective fields and the Red Sox are closing out a miserable injury-ridden season. It's not a fun time to be a fan...when do the C's start playing again? I've been here for 4 months now, which is pretty crazy. Some days it still feels like some kind of extended trip and sometimes I catch myself feeling at home, but most of all it feels weird to be away from my college friends for so long. I miss my teammates and even miss some of the routine of lacrosse. But I recently joined the Boston Sports Club which is awesome because they have TVs on every machine and good looking boys to watch while I work out. Creepinnnnnn!
You want me to show you the shake weight?

Who Says You Can't Go Home?

Nation, I report to you from beautiful Maryland, land of lax bros, horses, and identity-conflicted Orioles fans. I'm happy to say that all is well down here. Sure my parents' house is completely different. I don't even have a bedroom here anymore. Yes, some of my high school friends have moved away and geography and college has separated me from many others over the years. But some things never change.

It's surprisingly comforting to open the Washington Post each morning and read the crucially important reports from training camp, (Haynesworth still runs with an inhaler strapped across his face, Cooley's shorts grow shorter). Soon I will sit down and count the average times the Post uses "McNabb" and "Superbowl." It's now 40 days until we face the Cowgirls, and I'm feeling a mix of excitement and panic. I need to find a place that shows Skins games, and I need to gain the confidence (or stoop to a new low) to watch the Skins alone, alone in some bar that has gone against the tidal wave of New England sports.

I'll be back in Boston tomorrow, but tonight it's all about reliving the Glory Days - Little Hill, 2400 M, Mcfaddens (McFaddens DC!). Tomorrow it's back to work and the gingiest roommate. Maybe rather than count down the days to Redskins season I should be preparing myself for grad school to start? August 30th y'all.

My Mouse is Wicked Smaht

SOOOOO I'm updating the blog in my living room right now, and who have I seen 3 times in the past hour alone? Justin! Now you're probably asking yourself, who is Justin? Is this some smokin hot New England guy that keeps dropping by our apartment? Nope. Justin is the little mouse that just will not die.

Maybe mice in such close vicinity to Harvard and MIT (and obviously BU) are smarter than ordinary mice, because we've had a mousetrap out for almost 3 weeks and I have legitimately seen Justin waltz by that thing a number of times. He's not only too smart for cyanide, he's a bold little rodent. This guy saunters around the kitchen in broad daylight looking for fallen lucky charms. I scream at him, he runs back under the oven or fridge, and comes right back out 20 minutes later. I think we're going to try different traps...or a trip from the one and only Jackson...
In other news, I joined a boxing gym in Boston...in South Boston! Hopefully I won't have to use any combos I learn walking between the T and the gym. I mean, really.

Tell me lies, tell me sweet lil Julys

Thank GOD the World Cup is over. I mean really, I could only take so much more preaching from dudes on Boylston street about how rewarding it is to be a soccer fan during this whole thing. I'm sorry, the only sports to me that are worse to watch than soccer are golf and figure skating. The truth is that the only people who are soccer fans are former soccer players and people who studied abroad in some soccer-crazed country. And that makes things even worse because I apologize, but I really can't listen to you analyze boring soccer games AND explain to me how Barcelona changed your life your junior year, alright? People said to me, "But Mego, don't you want to cheer for team USA?" And I said, "Abso-fuckin-lutely! That's why we have TWO seasons of Olympics every 2 years. So I can watch snowboarding and basketball."

I understand what it's like for these poor soccer bastards. I played lacrosse and 85% of Americans don't care about that sport, but I don't pretend like something's wrong with them because they're not into it. There's a reason why most Americans get over soccer when they hit high school, that's all I'm sayin. And seriously, NEVER let those South African horns invade any sporting event again. Listening to those things was actually worse than listening to Lebron talk about all he's done for the city of Cleveland. Lebron? Thanks for ruining the NBA just when it was getting interesting again. In the words of Forrest Gump, That's all I got to say about THAT.

Shit My Roommate Says

Alaska is a very bright (and not ginger-wise) young woman with much to offer the city of Boston. That being said, she says some questionable shit:

"What's Rondo's last name?"

"Where's Ronaldo?" (During a Celtics game, when Rondo was benched)

"I actually like the smell of dead mice"

"Wait, Drake does his own reenactments?" (Confusing a televised concert with a reality show)

Me: We're going to Harp, it's a bar by the Garden.
Cab Driver: Okay-
Alaska: The Public Garden?
Me: No, no the basketball one...you know the TD Bank one? The Boston Garden?
Alaska: Mego, you can just call that the Garden.

"It's not that I can't swim, I learned to swim in saltwater. I just sink in freshwater. Like a pool."

Alaska: You would describe me as someone who doesn't follow sports? I was an athlete!
Me: Alaska, you couldn't name any Celtics.
Alaska: Ray...
Me: Allen.
Alaska: Yeah, Ray Antwon!

"Guess what, he used to be fat too!"

John Baker says Beacon Hill is broken, I say it's just snobby

Alright, there's no denying that I've been neglecting the blog the past two weeks. I've been preoccupied and adjusting, but I don't want to be the Gilbert Arenas of blogging. Or anything really.
I'm not going to discuss the Celtics loss, it's too painful. But over the past few weeks I've learned a lot about my new city. Mostly, I'm picking up a lot of new vocab...

1. The Pru: The Prudential Center. It's a really tall skyscraper, I'm not sure what its purpose is besides changing colors to let people know how the Celtics and Sox are doing. There are shops in it too.

2. The Public Garden: Or "Gahden." It's a specific part of the Common, the big pond where the swan boats are. It's in a Good Will Hunting scene, and a lot of bored people hang out there on weekdays and feed the ducks.

3. Dunks: Not Nikes. Dunkin Donuts. Boston loves Dunkin more than Seattle loves Starbucks and hippies. Dunkin might actually own Boston, which means Dunkin might be run by the mob. I don't feel that I'm jumping to irrational conclusions here.

4. BHP: Stands for Beacon Hill Pub. This bar is sort of hard to describe, everyone seems to be sort of embarrassed to admit that they drink there, but everyone secretly enjoys it. It's a fratty little dive bar where they have arcade basketball games and a bartender who looks like a skinny Will Ferrell.

5. Southie: South Boston, synonymous with land of Casey Afflecks and Leo circa The Departed.

I will try to be more diligent with my little blog, the SFBA continues (Search For Ben Affleck).

BAWSTON

Here it is, my first post from Boston. I've been here for almost a week now, and not surprisingly I am really liking it. Boston is sort of like DC but with less humidity, better sports teams, less politico banter, and taller guys. So I guess besides beautiful old buildings it's not so much like DC at all.
It's fun to be a transplant after having been a DC area native practically my whole life. The people in my neighborhood are pretty friendly, plus Alaska and I's TV on OnDemand has episodes from the first season of The OC.

I do have a lot to learn about being new in a strange city. For example, on Saturday we went out on Beacon Hill, and Alaska and I ran into some very intoxicated people on the street. One was an especially bizarre guy who gave us a business card that literally just said "Oliver" on the front with a phone number on the back. Alaska and I thought it would be funny to text this character the next day saying "Hey there Oliver." Well, our sassiness backfired. He proceeded to call me 3 times and send me some intense text messages, which is scary considering he definitely has no idea who Alaska and I are. I think I will try to refrain from any antics that could gain me a stalker. Although I could use someone who knows their way around the city.

College All-Time Top 10

Because I'm 4 days out of college and consistently reflecting on how amazing it was, I'm going to make a LIST post! Here it is, my top 10 moments at GWU:

10. The Night Before Junior Year Started: This is just one of those nights that I'll always think of when I talk about college. It was supposed to be just a few of us and some guy friends hanging out and having a couple beers, but somehow we shredded 4 phonebooks and "made it snow," engaged in a shaving cream fight, turned the kitchen table into a slip n' slide, and threw parts of the sofa out the window into the street. It was a good way to start off my second half of college.

9. Snowpacolypse: Is there much explanation needed? 10 days without school, limited lacrosse pre-season, and mounds of snow all over DC. I've never seen GW look so beautiful.

8. 2009 4th of July: I never thought that my freshman year 4th could be beat, but this one did it. Between my friend Baxter passing out at 11 am during Logan's annual "dramatic reading of the Constitution" and 12 hours of BBQs, fireworks, and bars, I would say independence day has definitely gotten better during the Obama administration.

7. Thurston 5th Floor: Where can I begin...I often tell people that living in Thurston was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and that feeling hasn't changed. I met some of my favorite people in that madhouse, and there are so many memories from there that I had to lump them all into this one number on the list. Playing hockey with empty skoal cans at 3 am after a night at the Exchange? Thank you, Mable.

6. Epic Mansion Party: This was the house party to top all college house parties. Brendan wore a green snuggie outfit and got into a fight with Mark at 4 am, and general mayhem filled the mansion. All was right in the world.

5. Lax Winning Streak: Freshman year, we were virtually unstoppable in the A-10. I couldn't totally appreciate it as a freshman, but the feeling was amazing, ending with an appearance in the conference finals. "We Takin' Over" will always hold a special place on my ipod.

4. Inauguration: It was freezing, Brendan and I both got dumped, but there was Nooshi. It was a whirlwind time but I look back on it fondly. Despite what else was going on, Obama finally moved to DC and I got to wear a pretty dress and dance to "Proud Mary."

3. Commencement Week: Everyone said it was the best week of college, but I didn't completely buy it until I experienced it first hand. Senior night after senior night, it was the ultimate degenerate marathon. I may be giving it extra credit because it was last week, but I don't think I'm hyping it.

2. Senior Year Halloween: Glowsticks, a Maryland flag, and Lovett dressed in a children's Elmo costume. The Chemical Brothers' "Saturate" made it onto our warm-up mix purely because of the simple joy we got from hearing it at DC9 last halloween. Brendan dressed as a creepy baby. There is no overrating this night, the only way it could have been improved would be adding Jumbo Slice.

1. Election Night: This was truly the most amazing moment of my college experience. Mobbing Penn Ave and chanting outside the white house can't be topped. I saw people dancing on top of cars downtown and generally felt ecstatic the entire night.

Commencing

It's been a little while since I've posted, and really I have no excuse because Lord knows I haven't done anything productive this week, unless you consider deciding to read aloud at 4 am to practice my "reporter" voice after I've come home from the bar productive. Commencement week has been wonderful, especially now that Snooks has moved out.
Honestly, I'm only blogging right now because I'm watching Julie & Julia and it's making me feel guilty about neglecting my little Mego Blog. This movie is not really impressing me that much so far. I don't like to cook and I don't really care about French people, unless they are making a dress I want to wear. I really wanted to watch Paranormal Activity but being alone in my place in Ivory is sort of creeping me out (when I'm sober). Amy Adams has never eaten an egg in this movie. That's it, I can't relate.

I don't really feel like blogging about my feelings on graduation, as they seem to change every 10 minutes. I'm excited to wear my graduation dress, but not my cap and gown. I forgot how hideous and awful everyone looks in these things. We are going to look like a bunch of giant black crows descending on the ellipse. What a nightmarish vision at 7:30 am. This will probably be my last post as a college student; I'm getting sort of sick of all these "This is my last _______ as a college student." I guess I should start packing my stuff up...sometime soon...watching this movie still beats going through my pre-kindle book collection.
